Kamala Harris addresses Congressional Black Caucus dinner with a 'new accent'

Vice President Kamala Harris faced criticism online for adopting what some perceived as a "new accent" during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Phoenix Awards Dinner on Saturday night.

In her address, Harris said, "Hello to all of my Divine Nine brothers and sisters, and to all my HBCU brothers and sisters." This remark highlighted her affiliation with a historically Black sorority from her time at Howard University.

The clip, shared by the account End Wokeness on X, was captioned: "BREAKING: Kamala Harris unveils a new accent at the Black Caucus Dinner." Critics on social media noted that Harris, who was raised in Canada, has used varying accents depending on her location during her campaign.

Earlier this month, Harris was similarly criticized after videos showed her using different accents while campaigning in Detroit and Pittsburgh within hours of each other. Fox News' Peter Doocy questioned White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the apparent accent shifts, asking, "Since when does the vice president have what sounds like a southern accent?"

Jean-Pierre responded by downplaying the significance of the issue, stating, "They care about the economy. They care about lowering costs. They care about healthcare. That’s what Americans care about."

On social media, reactions ranged from skepticism to outright mockery. X user Paul A. Szypula wrote, "New? Or is it her old fake black accent? Either way, it’s incredibly insulting to black people. Shame on Kamala."

Collin Rugg shared the clip with his 1.4 million followers, stating, "NEW: Kamala Harris brings out her new accent at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 2024 Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington D.C."

Columnist James Hirsen also commented on the accent change, referring to it as "Kamala Harris accent du jour" to his 270,500 followers.
