Taylor Swift Leads 2024 MTV Video Music Awards With 10 Nominations

"Fortnite" is in the running for Video of the Year, competing against major contenders like Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” Billie Eilish’s “Lunch,” Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red,” Eminem’s “Houdini,” and SZA’s “Snooze.” This marks Eminem’s record-setting ninth nomination in this category, including one with D12. Taylor Swift has secured her seventh nod, while it’s the fourth time for both Grande and Doja Cat, the third for Eilish and SZA, and, in a surprise twist, the first for Post Malone.

Taylor Swift has already made history with four Video of the Year wins for “Bad Blood” (2015), “You Need to Calm Down” (2019), “All Too Well: The Short Film” (2022), and “Anti-Hero” (2023). This year, she’s aiming to extend her record and become the first artist to win three consecutive years.

Several other artists also garnered multiple nominations: Anitta, Benson Boone, Bleachers, GloRilla, Dua Lipa, and Tyla each secured three nominations. Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Drake, Jelly Roll, Jessie Murph, Jung Kook, Latto, Rauw Alejandro, Sexyy Red, Tate McRae, Usher, and Victoria Monét all received two nominations.

It’s surprising that Chappell Roan and Charli XCX didn’t receive more nods, as both artists gained major momentum toward the end of the eligibility period (June 22, 2023, to June 20, 2024). Similarly, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” missed out on Video of the Year and Best Hip-Hop nominations, likely because the video was released on July 4, just outside the cutoff. Late-breaking artists may still have a shot at recognition when nominations for social-only categories like Song of the Summer are announced in the coming weeks.

Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims, and Tyla are up for Best New Artist. Four of these names are expected to be contenders in the same category when the Grammy nominations are revealed on November 8. However, Abrams and Tyla are ineligible—Abrams was already nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys earlier this year, and Tyla won in a different category (Best African Music Performance). Notably, neither Sabrina Carpenter nor Sexyy Red received nominations for Best New Artist at the VMAs.
