Four dead, nine hospitalized following shooting at Georgia high school; 14-year-old suspect in custody
Four people were killed and nine others hospitalized with injuries following a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning, authorities confirmed.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey reported that the deceased include two students and two teachers. The victims were identified as students Mason Schermerhorn, 14, and Christian Angulo, 14, along with teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. Aspinwall and Irimie were both math teachers at the school.
The suspect, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the school, is in custody. Hosey stated that Gray will be charged with murder and processed as an adult. He is currently being held at the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.
Gray surrendered when confronted by law enforcement and has been cooperative with the ongoing investigation. The FBI had previously interviewed Gray and his father last year about online threats related to a school shooting, but no further action was taken at the time due to insufficient evidence.
The shooting occurred around 10:23 a.m. EDT, and the school was cleared within an hour. A new security system installed just a week earlier and three school resource officers were on campus during the incident. The school was placed on lockdown, and students were eventually released to their families.
Marques Coleman, a 14-year-old student, described the chaotic scene, noting that he saw Gray with a large gun and heard multiple shots before taking cover.
Emergency responders, including ambulances and a medical helicopter, were on-site shortly after the incident. The FBI and state officials are supporting local authorities as the investigation continues. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and President Biden have both issued statements expressing support and urging prayers for those affected.
Apalachee High School, which has approximately 1,900 students, will remain closed for the remainder of the week.
