Trump criticizes Democrats and praises the Secret Service ahead of today’s town hall.

Former President Donald Trump was scheduled to hold a town hall in Michigan on Tuesday, following a recent security scare at his Florida golf course. Trump praised the Secret Service for their role in thwarting what he described as an assassination attempt at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. The incident involved a suspect armed with an assault-style rifle who approached the course on Sunday. Although the suspect, Ryan Routh, never fired any shots, Trump commended the agents and a civilian who helped capture the suspect by photographing his license plate.

Trump expressed regret that he couldn’t finish his golf round but was otherwise thankful for the Secret Service's swift response. Authorities have charged Routh, a convicted felon, with firearm offenses. The Secret Service confirmed Routh never had Trump in his line of sight and had no prior knowledge of Trump's presence at the course.

In related developments:

  • Former Ukrainian soldier Evelyn Aschenbrenner described Routh as "delusional," though Ukraine has distanced itself from any link to Routh’s actions.
  • Trump's golfing partner, Steve Witkoff, praised the Secret Service for their “heroic” response, noting their effective evacuation of Trump and others.
  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis questioned the impartiality of the federal investigation into the incident and announced plans to appoint a state prosecutor to oversee the case.

On Monday night, Trump, speaking on the X Spaces platform, attributed the incident to Democratic rhetoric and called for an expansion of his Secret Service detail, while again praising the agents involved in the incident.
