Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to deliver her concession speech for the 2024 presidential election on Wednesday from Howard University in Washington, D.C. The speech is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET, according to a source familiar with the event.
Initially, Harris was set to address supporters at an election night gathering at Howard University, her alma mater and a historically Black college. However, as the vote counts progressed early Wednesday morning, it became apparent that former President Donald Trump had secured victory, granting him a second term in the White House.
Pre-election polls indicated a close contest between Harris and Trump, but Trump ultimately won a decisive victory, capturing key battleground states like North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—states that had been marked as toss-ups for weeks.
Harris became the Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden exited the race in July, following a weak performance in a June 27 debate with Trump. Throughout her three-month campaign, Harris contended with the challenges of an unpopular incumbent, as Biden's disapproval rating in exit polls stood at around 41%.
Despite these challenges, Harris and Democratic fundraising committees broke records, amassing over $1 billion since her nomination. Among her prominent supporters were billionaires like Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Meanwhile, Elon Musk was among those who backed Trump.
